New Netflix Mini-Series, ‘Maniac’ Is Multi-Reality Brain Magic

Netflix is about to release one of its best new mini-series on Friday. If a doctor promised that they could give you the right combination of meds to cure you of all of your deepest emotional traumas including removing heartbreak, curing depression, and erasing self-doubt — would you think it’s too good to be true? Of course, it’s too good to be true!

Annie Landsberg (Emma Stone) and Owen Milgrim (Jonah Hill) are two strangers drawn to the late stages of a mysterious pharmaceutical trial. Each has a different reason for participating in the experiment. She is aimless and fixated on broken relationships with her mother and sister. He’s struggled throughout his life with a disputed diagnosis of schizophrenia. The radical treatment uses pills that the inventor claims can repair anything about the mind. It draws Annie, Owen, and 10 other subjects into a three-day drug trial. The doctors tell them the treatment will permanently solve all of their problems, with no complications or side effects. Unfortunately, things don’t go as planned.

Director Cary Fukunaga brings a surreal sense of levity to the 10-episode series due out on Sept.21st; this could be the binge-worthy, WTF small-screen sensation of the season
