The Black Keys Release First New Single In Five Years

The Black Keys released their first new single in five years and it’s everything that you already love about them but was it worth the wait?

The Black Keys have finally released “Lo/Hi,” their first new single in five years. It’s the band’s first new project since their last album, Turn Blue, was released in 2014. Recorded at Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville,  fuzzy, lo-fi blues-rocker vibe is in line with the Black Keys’ signature sound with the addition of a choir of glorious all-female backing vocalists to assist on the chorus.

Although the band hasn’t released new music in five years, lead vocalist, Dan Auerbach, released his solo album Waiting on a Song in 2017 and the Amazon exclusive single “Up on a Mountain of Love in 2018.  And Keys drummer Patrick Carney debuted a single last month and announced a new album from his new duo Sad Planets. But a full-length album Keys hasn’t been announced and as far as we know, the new single isn’t associated with a larger project. This might be all Keys fans get for now.

Pitchfork recently published a review of the single calling it “wholly unsurprising” and chastised the band for their extended vacancy from music. Well, we wholly disagree with you, Pitchfork, you pretentious bitches.

Black Keys fans aren’t looking to be surprised. They want the same fuzzy lo-fi chugging blues-rock anthems they signed up for nine years ago when the Keys burst onto the national scene. Good music is good music. And that should come as no surprise at all so If you’re a Black Keys music lover, you should be wholly satisfied with this little nugget.
